Troops pursue ISWAP fighters to Niger Republic, soldiers, terrorists killed – Punch Newspapers

THE Nigerian Army said it troops of Sector 2 Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, have neutralised two Islamic State West Africa Province/Boko Haram insurgents during a counter-attack on Sunday.
The Army said the terrorists attempted to gain access into Babangida community in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State to loot in order to restock, but were repelled by the troops.
A statement on Monday by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General, Onyema Nwachukwu, indicated that the counter-attack by the troops forced the terrorists to withdraw, adding that two of the insurgents were killed and several were injured.
The statement was titled, ‘Troops neutralise two insurgents in Babangida, capture weapons’.

It read, “The insurgents made futile effort to infiltrate and pillage the community, but were met with a fierce counter-attack by the vigilant troops, forcing them to withdraw in disarray, leaving traces of blood littering their route as they fled.
“Aside inflicting casualty on the insurgents, the gallant troops also captured one BHT/ISWAP Heckler and Koch 21 Guns, Three AK 47 rifle magazines, 213 links of 7.62mm and two grenades. Further exploitation by the troops is still ongoing.”

Also troops of Operation Hadarin Daji in conjunction with other security agencies repelled an attack on the Forward Operation Base at Burkusuma in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State by suspected Islamic States for West African Province terrorists and bandits.

The incident was said to have happened in the early hours of Sunday.
According to a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Benjamin Sawyerr, the main troops were out conducting offensive operations when the bandits and terrorists struck, but a quick reinforcement helped repelled the attack.
He noted that scores of the attackers were killed and several injured, adding that the troops went after others who fled to Niger Republic.
He said the attackers used telecommunication network provided from neighbouring country.
He, however, confirmed that there were some casualties recorded on the part of Nigerian troops during the encounter.
