Worried by rising insecurity in Imo State, the National Directorate For Employment and the member representing Nwangele/Isu/Njaba/Nkwerre Federal Constituency of the state, Ugonna Ozurigbo, had begun the empowerment of 600 youths in the state in various skill acquisition programs.
This, NDE and Ozurigbo said would reduce the insecurity the state is battling with.
At the flag-off program held in Owerri, NDE said it was happy to partner Ozurigbo, who is the House of Representatives committee chairman on judiciary, to genuinely train and empower 600 youths in different skills of life.
The Director-General of NDE, Abubakar Fikpo, said that the program was aimed at disabusing thousands of youths from taking to crime by being gainfully empowered.

Represented by Malam Ismaila Mama, Fikpo said that the FG was committed to a Nigerian environment where the youths would make honest livings through genuine skills.
Ozurigbo said that he was committed to an environment where the youths would be meaningfully engaged thereby denouncing crime.
Ozurigbo, a former deputy speaker of the state House of Assembly, said, “Today, we have come to equip and empower 600 youth in various skill acquisition programs. I am doing this because I started my own life after university education with just N18,000, but the difference was that I was focused.

“I am happy that the National Directorate For Employment is here to train you. At the end of the program, I will make sure you get all you need to start off. While some of you will get equipment, others will get funds to start up businesses and skills of their choice.

“I am not doing this because I am a politician but because I believe in your dreams. I believe in human capital development. I believe in the peace-building process of our environment. But you must be focused. If you are not focused, you will not go far in life.
“Staff of National Directorate For Employment are here to train you. The equipment and funds are ready. You will get empowered and equipped immediately after you are through with the training. You are expected to also empower others with the knowledge you get today.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Hussaini, said that the command was happy with such program which was capable of drastically reducing crime in the state.
Former Dean, law faculty of Imo State University, Prof Uba Nnabue, who delivered the keynote address at the flag-off program, urged the beneficiaries to utilise the opportunity the program brought, adding that nobody becomes great in life without acquiring one skill or the other.
The don said, “Skill acquisition is neither thuggery nor associated with unknown gunmen. Skills are acquired by law-abiding citizens who join hands to improve society. They are not associated with drug takers or any other negative vice.”
